Booster Cushion Theatre has had lots of fun touring our ‘Little Red Riding Hood and Friends’ show to schools throughout the UK. A traditional tales theatre performance for schools is a great way to encourage children to take a greater interest in topics they are learning about in class. Children have had lots of fun with this retelling of the story and even making their own stories themselves. This blog features some pictures from our show during a school’s Book Week!
Little Red Riding Hood and Friends is a comical mixture of fairytales with lots of puns and slapstick comedy. Little Red’s friend arrives to tell the story but finds out that there are no pages in the book! He asks the audience for help remembering the story and we get to meet Red’s family. But when we get to the forest, no one can remember what happens next so the narrator has to think of the next best thing – calling Red’s best friend, Cinderella. She arrives dancing with Jack’s Baked Beans Band and suggests auditions to find the Wolf that ends the story.
There’s lots of participation from the audience in this fairytale mix like helping Red’s dad to cut down trees in Wonderland, playing instruments in Jack’s Baked Beans Band, dancing a conga with Cinderella and auditioning to be the wolves!
Booster Cushion Theatre shows aim to be as flexible as possible so that they fit into a variety of spaces, inside or out. A traditional tales theatre performance for schools is a great way to add to the curriculum and encourage children to take a greater interest in the subjects that they are learning about such as the retelling of traditional tales. There’s lots of chances for follow up work and over the years we’ve seen some great drawings or children’s own stories.
