Booster Cushion Theatre has been running artistic summer schools for the last two years with a large academy in Hounslow. We have worked over two weeks with 60 plus children with various ethnic and social backgrounds to produce a performance on a theme chosen by the host school.
Throughout the two weeks, we worked with 11 – 12 year olds taking their written work and artistic ideas suggested by the theme and pulled this together to make a performance which their parents, guardians and friends all saw on the last day of the summer school. In 2013, we chose a theme of New Beginnings, which dealt with the exploration of coming to a new school which was lost in a jungle and all the associated animals and fauna that had been trapped in its walls. The children constructed the brickwork for the school, the forest, the aeroplanes, animals, birds, dinosaurs and sea creatures (even a massive Whale!) out of simple art materials. They also developed their own short scripts from the written work of the fortnight.
When working with groups of 60, we have 6 assistants – 2 specialising in art, 2 specialising in drama and 2 cross over artists, shooting a video documentary of the making of the show and the final production. The summer school workshop has been extremely successful, but they do take a lot of planning. If you are interested in booking a summer school, please contact us 6-8 months in advance.
